Skunk Guide

My Dog Got Sprayed by a Skunk — Now What?

The first 10 minutes matter most. Keep your dog outside, check their eyes, and mix the de-skunking formula — here's the full walkthrough.

It usually happens at night: your dog bolts toward the fence line, there's a scuffle, and suddenly the unmistakable smell hits. Skunk spray on a dog is miserable but manageable — if you act quickly and in the right order.

First: Keep Your Dog Outside

Whatever you do, don't let your dog run through the house. Skunk spray is an oil that transfers to carpet, furniture, and bedding on contact — one lap around the living room can turn a pet problem into a whole-house odor problem.

Check Their Eyes and Mouth

Skunks aim for the face. If your dog's eyes are red, watering, or squinting, flush them gently with cool water or a pet-safe eye rinse. Spray in the eyes is painful but rarely causes lasting damage. If irritation persists or your dog was bitten or scratched in the encounter, call your veterinarian — and verify their rabies vaccination is current, since skunks are a known rabies carrier in Kentucky and Indiana.

The De-Skunking Formula

Mix fresh, in an open container, immediately before use:

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1–2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap

Wearing rubber gloves, work the mixture into your dog's dry coat (avoiding the eyes), let it sit about five minutes, then rinse thoroughly and follow with regular pet shampoo. Repeat if needed. Never store the mixture in a sealed bottle — it builds pressure. Note that peroxide can lighten dark fur slightly.

Wash the collar and leash separately, and launder any towels immediately with regular detergent plus half a cup of baking soda.

Stop It From Happening Again

A dog that gets sprayed in its own yard usually means a skunk is living or foraging there regularly. Look for den holes under decks, sheds, and porches, and grub-digging damage in the lawn. Removing the skunk and excluding den sites is the only reliable way to prevent a repeat — most dogs never learn to leave skunks alone.
